Discover Noricum's R & D

Noricum was born as a result of the research activity developed by Tissue Engineering Bone Regeneration Group of the UCM University.

Since its foundation, Noricum has adapted it's research to the needs of each moment, always with the ultimate goal of developing clinical applications of BMPs in Tissue Engineering.

At first, the research and development at Noricum was focused on the development of protocols for obtaining such BMPs, through cloning, expression, folding and purification. The work then resulted in the production of active dimeric protein with very good yields, higher than, in light of the literature, the one that reached other authors who express the same protein in similar systems. However, the major advantage of our protocols is that no organic solvents or detergents are used in the folding process. This allowed us to make new experiments with a reasonable cost, taking into account the prices in the market for recombinant proteins BMP2 and BMP4.

Subsequently, we dealt with the process of developing a suitable biomaterial for the release of proteins in vivo. The work allowed the development a biomaterial in the shape of a film with a high capacity for cell adhesion and also able to retain on their surface the BMP2 in active form. A result of this work has been the Spanish Patent PE20002057 currently under International PCT processing (PCT/ES01/00322) that has passed the State Examination of Matter by the European Patent Office, in recognition of inventive activity. It is currently pending in other countries outside the EU.

Currently the company is registered as a manufacturer and marketer of medical devices to the Ministry of Health, having finished on January 2011 a new facility suitable for the production of recombinant protein as well as the coating of implants and 3D matrix with our films meeting all health requirements.
